Recommendations for Elders & Deacons The saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of [elder
or deacon] The Church Officer Nominating Committee is a committee comprised of representatives of the Session, Board of Deacons, and the congregation. Its purpose mandated in the Book of Order is to bring a slate of potential deacons and elders to the congregational meeting. To assist the committee in their work, we are asking you to submit the names of men or women you know whom we should consider for the Class of 2008. The Book of Order is very clear about considering both men and women giving fair representation to all persons of all ages and racial ethnic members and persons with disabilities. Ordination in the Presbyterian Church is for life. A person remains an ordained deacon or elder even though they may not be serving actively on a board. Ordination is a "setting apart" of certain persons for a particular ministry. These persons are to be exemplary in lifestyle, temperate, sensible, hospitable, gentle, and above reproach (1 Timothy 3). Below you will find a suggestion form which you can fill out and return to the church office. In addition to suggesting a name, also please provide a rationale why you think this person would be a good deacon or elder. Here are some of the qualifications the committee looks for in a potential elder or deacon:
